Golden Silk Cloth With Spider Silk In Madagascar

According to wired magazine, a million wild spiders

Golden cloth

On display at American Museum of Natural History in New York, this is the only fabric in the world that has been woven with natural silk.

Simon Pierce, a textile expert who led the project, said: "spider silk has good elasticity, and it has incredible strength compared with steel and Kevlar fibers.

Many researchers around the world are trying to replicate the tensile properties of spider silk, so that it can be applied to medicine and industry, but so far, no one has been able to reproduce the properties of natural spider silk 100%.

I heard that a French missionary was here.

Madagascar

After studying the spider story, Pearce sprouted the idea of making spider silk fabrics.

Jacob Paul, a French missionary, built a small hand-held machine to extract spider silk in the late nineteenth Century. He also extracted 24 spider silk threads without harming them.

Luckily, Pearce also successfully produced the machine for extracting spider silk and experimented with 24 spiders. When they saw the Golden Spider Silk came out, they were excited.

To weave a certain amount of textiles, Pearce and his collaborators must expand the production of spider silk on a large scale.

The spiders produced only 1 ounces (about 28.35 grams) of 14 thousand silk spiders, and the textile they prepared was about 2.6 pounds (about 1.18 kilograms), which required a large number of wild spiders.

In order to get as many spiders as possible, Pearce and his colleagues employed dozens of workers who specialize in collecting spiders and weaving spiders on wire drawing machines.

As spiders bite, workers must be willing to deal with spiders and be very careful.

Pearce hired 70 workers for 4 years to collect about 1000000 golden ball spiders on the poles in Madagascar, while the other 12 workers were responsible for extracting about 80 feet (about 24.4 meters) of spider silk from each spider.

Finally, it was woven into 2.6 pounds of 11 feet and 4 feet of textiles.

The Golden Globe spider is very common in Madagascar. It is famous for its golden silk.

Since this spider can only produce silk in the local rainy season, the collection of spiders must be done from October to June next year.

Once the spiders are finished, spiders will be put back into the wild, and they will be able to regenerate silk for about a week, so some spiders will be reused many times.

Of course, it took 4 years to produce this kind of silk fabric, which is very unworthy for scientists who study the properties of spider silk. But in the face of the rare golden fabric, no one will doubt its high value.
